Southwest unveils 2 new seasonal routes in latest schedule extension

Southwest Airlines has announced two new nonstop routes as it extends its booking schedule into November. The new routes will connect Memphis to Las Vegas and Nashville to Richmond, Virginia. These routes will operate with less-than-daily service and are seasonal.

The Memphis-Las Vegas route will begin on October 3rd, with one daily round-trip flight each Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The Nashville-Richmond route will begin on October 6th, with one round-trip flight operating only on Sundays.

Southwest Airlines also announced the resumption of a route between Phoenix and Houston. These daily flights will begin on October 3rd, marking the return of a route that Southwest last flew in October 2023.

The announcement of these new routes comes as Southwest extends its flight booking schedule through November 2nd. While most major U.S. airlines publish schedules about 11 months in advance, Southwest’s booking schedule goes about seven months. The carrier extends this window several times throughout the year.

Southwest’s schedule extensions typically include new routes and sometimes the end of others, making it an anticipated announcement among industry observers. However, the latest announcement is relatively quiet compared to previous schedule extensions. In October, for example, Southwest unveiled 30 new routes.

Despite the quieter announcement, the schedule update includes the return of many seasonal routes for the fall and winter schedules. These routes will feature weekend-only service, such as Atlanta-Cancun, Phoenix-Cincinnati, Kansas City-Las Cabos, Mexico, and Orlando-Grand Rapids, Michigan.
