A major transformation is currently underway at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), one of the busiest airports in the world. The airport is undergoing significant upgrades, including the construction of two brand-new terminals and the overhaul of several existing terminals. Among these upgrades, perhaps the most exciting is the development of Terminal 6, which recently celebrated one year since construction began. This new terminal is set to open in the first quarter of 2026, offering travelers a glimpse of what to expect once it is operational.
Terminal 6, located adjacent to the existing Terminal 5, is set to span a massive 1.2 million square feet and will feature 10 new gates, with nine capable of handling wide-body jets. The terminal will be connected airside to Terminal 5, providing passengers with a seamless connecting experience. The Lufthansa Group has already announced plans to become the first tenant of the new terminal, with other airlines in advanced discussions to also move their operations there. The terminal will boast a range of amenities, including up to five airline lounges and a new arrivals lounge, as well as a centralized TSA checkpoint and Customs and Border Protection immigration area for international arrivals.
The new terminal’s design is expected to be cutting-edge, with a focus on passenger comfort and efficiency. From a spacious departures hall to a bright and airy Grand Hall in the departures area, Terminal 6 is set to become one of the nicest terminals in the country. The terminal will also feature a new ground transportation center and taxi stand shared with Terminal 5, as well as connectivity to the AirTrain stations for Terminal 5 and Terminal 7.
In addition to Terminal 6, JFK’s existing Terminal 1 is also undergoing a major transformation as part of a $9.5 billion project. The new Terminal One at JFK will consolidate the current and former sites of terminals 1, 2, and 3 into a massive 2.4 million-square-foot international terminal, set to become the largest at JFK. The first phase of the project, including the new arrivals and departures hall and 14 new gates, is expected to open in 2026, with full completion slated for 2030.
These developments are part of the JFK Vision Plan, a strategic initiative from the Port Authority aimed at reimagining the airport and improving the passenger experience. In addition to Terminal 6 and the new Terminal One, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have also invested in upgrades to their respective terminals at JFK, enhancing facilities and amenities for travelers.
While the ongoing construction may cause some disruptions and inconveniences for passengers in the short term, the long-term benefits of these upgrades are expected to be significant.
